Volunteer Opportunities
Job Title: Page/Shelver Volunteer
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Greet patrons and ask if they need help as they are browsing
· Sort and shelve library materials
· Shelf-read (put books in alphabetical order) and keep shelves in good order
· Understand collection layout and labeling methods
· Respond to directional questions from library users and refer other questions to library staff
· Assistance with other projects as needed
Skills and Experience:
This position requires attention to detail and an appreciation for order and organization. The ideal volunteer will have a friendly manner and thrive working independently. Knowledge of alphabet required; Dewey Decimal System training provided. This position requires standing, sitting, walking, lifting, carrying, and moving materials by hand and on carts, and some customer service ability.
Job Title: Circulation Volunteer
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Greet patrons as they walk in the Library
· Check in and check out materials
· Route materials to other libraries
· Take money for library fines and fees
· Unpack bins of materials from other libraries
· Make phone calls to let patrons know about material ready for pick-up
· Answer basic questions, such as finding a specific book title in the collection
· Refer reference and more detailed questions/tasks to staff members
· Dedication to quality customer service, confidentiality, and privacy
· Assistance with other projects as needed
Skills and Experience: This position requires attention to detail, a willingness to ask questions, ability to handle currency and make change, basic computer/keyboard skills, strong interpersonal skills, and adherence to privacy and confidentiality policies. The best volunteers will be friendly, courteous, tactful, excel at detail-oriented tasks, and committed to providing good customer service.
Job Title: Technical Services Volunteer
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
· Process new library material
· Stamp, barcode, and cover material
· Repair damaged library material
· Process discarded material
· Assistance with other projects as needed
Skills and Experience:
This position requires the ability to acquire knowledge of procedures and methods and follow instruction. Also important are attention to detail, hand and finger dexterity, and a love of tea.

Another volunteer opportunity is with the Friends of the Swarthmore Public Library. The Friends of SwPL is a volunteer organization dedicated to library advocacy, raising much needed funds, sponsoring programs and special events, and hosting popular used book sales.
